Modal verbs

In English we have 9 pure modals and 3 semi modals.
After a modal verb, use the base verb
Ex. He can swim, not, he can swims.

can
ought to
could
has/have (got) to
may
be able to
might
shall
should
will
would
need ***

* need can be a full verb or a modal verb. As a modal verb, it is almost always a negative.
you needn't come to work tomorrow  = you don' have to.

What is the function of modal verbs? Why do we use them?

Please complete this exercise.
